What is Turmeric?

The turmeric root, often referred to as Indian saffron or golden spice, originates from the Curcuma longa plant, a ginger species native to Southeast Asia. Turmeric is also known as curcumin because of the presence of curcumin polyphenol. Because of its antioxidant properties, curcumin is the most important bioactive ingredient giving turmeric its distinctive yellow colour.

Since turmeric tea is an herbal tea, it does not contain high amounts of caffeine, and appears to be a good caffeine-free alternative to coffee since it can naturally boost energy levels.

Some Proven Benefits of Turmeric

Traditionally, for many health issues, including breathing difficulties, rheumatism, pain and exhaustion, turmeric has been used. Effective against Inflammation, arthritis, stomach, skin and liver diseases, turmeric is often used to decrease flatus, jaundice, menstrual difficulties, colic or digestive disorders.


Recently, several studies have also proven its effectiveness as a potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, antimutagenic and anti cancer agent.

Turmeric has been shown to prevent cancer cells from cell-proliferation.

Turmeric is also hepatoprotective, hypoglycemic and cardioprotective. Brewing turmeric with tea and adding, lemon, honey or pepper can increase its health benefits since such blends improve the bio-availability of curcumin in the turmeric. So brew yourself some turmeric tea whenever you want!

Turmeric Tea Recipe

– 2 cups of water
– Ground Turmeric (1 teaspoon)
– Cinnamon (1/2 teaspoon)
– Ground Ginger (1/2 teaspoon)
– Honey or Maple syrup (1 teaspoon)
– 1 lemon wedge (1 teaspoon)

Pour the mixture into a pot and heat thoroughly for three to five minutes until hot.

Serve Warm as is for a daily Detox Turmeric Tea, or add 1 cup of hot milk to make a delicious Golden Latté!
