1- So What is Matcha?
Matcha is a powder collected from finely grounded green tea leaves (Tencha). This powder is mixed with hot water in a bowl called a chasen and whipped using a small, traditional bamboo whisk. Matcha green tea has gained popularity in North America quite recently yet it has been consumed for centuries.
Indeed, the fact of grinding tea leaves and making it into a drink is an ancient Chinese tradition of over a thousand years that was introduced to Japan by Buddhist monks. This tea was traditionally prepared and drunk as part of Zen tea ceremonies, in order to induce meditation.

Considered a super food, this green tea powder contains many beneficial substances: essential oils, tannins, enzymes and phenolic compounds. matcha green tea has long been considered by the samurai as a medicine. This healthy drink is endowed with a particular nutritional quality due to its richness in catechin, an antioxidant that strengthens the immune system and fights against cholesterol. Additionally, the subtle caffeine content helps with concentration, which could be explained by theanine which increases the levels of serotonin, dopamine, and glycine in the brain. In addition to its many beneficial effects, the Japanese are also fond of it for its action against aging of the skin and in particular against the appearance of wrinkles.
3- What does Matcha tastes like ?
Very rich on the palate, matcha has a fresh vegetal taste at first, subtly astringent with a creamy consistency and a slightly sweet finish. A delicious flavor without bitterness, called umami.
However, not all matchas are equal. It may or may not be bitter depending on its quality, and its particular taste is not unanimous among tea lovers. Indeed, while some love it, others just don’t like it.
